The Ham Story: Re-evaluating Tradition and Process

In the world of business, we often find ourselves doing things a certain way simply because “that’s how we’ve always done it.” Much like the long-told story of the ham, this can become a ritual or routine that gets passed down through generations without ever being questioned. But as leaders and teams, we need to ask ourselves: Why are we doing this? Is there still a valid reason behind it, or has it simply become tradition?

In the early days, the ham was cut at both ends because the oven was too small to fit the whole thing. The decision was made out of necessity, and it solved a problem. But over time, that practice was passed down as tradition, with no one questioning whether it was still necessary. Eventually, the oven became large enough to accommodate the entire ham, but the cutting continued simply because “that’s how it was always done.”

Apply this to business: many of our practices in the workplace—whether they’re procedures, ways of communicating, or even tools we use—may have been set up for reasons that were valid at the time but are no longer relevant. Just because something worked in the past doesn’t mean it’s still the best approach for today.

Why Should We Ask ‘Why’?

  • Process Improvement: Just like the oven that grew larger, businesses evolve, and so do their needs. What worked before might not be the most efficient or effective solution now. Continuously assessing our processes can help uncover unnecessary steps, reduce waste, and boost productivity.
  • Innovation: When we question traditional methods, we open ourselves up to new ideas and possibilities. What might seem like a small change could lead to big improvements—whether it’s technology, communication, or workflows.
  • Resource Allocation: Resources, including time, money, and energy, should be focused on what truly adds value. If something doesn’t contribute to the bottom line or strategic goals anymore, it’s time to reassess. Trimming unnecessary processes can free up time for more valuable work.
  • Cultural Shift: Encouraging a mindset of reevaluating practices can lead to a culture of continuous improvement. Employees at all levels should feel empowered to ask, “Why do we do it this way?” and suggest better alternatives. A culture of curiosity drives long-term growth.

By taking the time to ask “Why?” and reexamine the rituals and processes we’ve inherited, businesses can drive meaningful improvements. It’s not just about keeping things the way they are because “that’s how we’ve always done it.” It’s about ensuring that everything we do has a purpose and continues to add value.
Just like the ham, some traditions may be worth keeping. But it’s important to always ask—is this still serving us, or is it time for a change?
